If writing goals leave you feeling 'meh' or you've missed a target & lost your mojo, start where you are right now - with advice from author Robin Sloan.
I loved interviewing Robin Sloan for our book and his interview remains one of my favourites ever. It's weird reaching out to authors you love, people you admire, asking for favours - and then when they agree, it kind of blows your mind. I am a proud fangirl! As I have got older, I have learned to own it, tell people you love their stuff (and who knows, they might agree to talk to you).
Yes! You are so right. Are you a goal setter by nature or do you avoid them? I find it so interesting that many writers feel they 'should' have goals and feel bad they don't aim for big targets, when actually they are making progress step by step in a direction that serves them.
I'm a natural at goal-setting. What I need to refine is aligning and structuring my goals. That way, I can see clearly that I am actually, as you said, "progressing step by step in a direction the serves" me.
Morning - I’ve registered for your midpoint motivation session and have a question to discuss if that’s ok? 😊 After coming back from a recent hiking holiday I’ve learnt that the “false summit” is a lot like writing my novel! I’m always working towards mini deadlines, but even when I achieve them I am still disappointed that another rewrite is on the horizon. How do we balance goal setting, when sometimes novel writing is a game of whac a mole? How do we know when the end is in sight or just a mirage? Thanks (weary hiker/novelist). Thank you. Ps massive fan of your work 😁
I LOVE this question and have many thoughts. I shall curb my enthusiasm and wait to answer next week. In the meantime, I am going to enjoy researching false summits and finding fun metaphors to combine hiking and writing. I hope you get a chance to rest your weary limbs so you can climb (conquer) the next summit.

Goals are personal and fluid. And goals serve the writer, and not the other way around. =D

Edith this is great - I'd like to explore this in the webinar next week. More to come!
